Well, "look and see" does seem like the obvious answer. Alright bro, you can check your mass/fat gain compared to before with pictures. If you look less defined, less "veiny", fewer striations, then yeah, you gained fat. But that's not bad, at least if your bulking, just cut back and start again. That's what I'm doing right now, I don't cut though, just eat cleaner and do cardio for a few days(important: eat complex carbs like brown rice, potatoes, and whole wheat breads) and eat cleaner. You can also check if you compare your ffmi and check how much that has changed(this would give an estimate on how much mass you gained that was not fat). Hope I helped! Good luck!

FFMI=fat-free mass index, it tells you how much mass you have without any fat. I really don't know if you should go into cutting just yet, what is your age? Also, you shouldn't cut unless your over 15% body fat or something like that(it's just not that necessary). Well, although fat loss is easier by limiting carbs, you should keep in mind that carbs keep your muscles with a bulkier look, if you take them out and do something like the paleo diet(fats and protein) you will lose body fat but your muscles will look depleted af. So don't really limit carbs(you could actually only eat Twinkies and lose weight/fat-it's been done before), what you should limit is calories. It doesn't really matter where the calories come from, caloric deficit=fat loss. You should try to keep a 50% caloric intake on carbs, 30% caloric intake on protein, and 20% caloric intake on fats when "cutting". You don't want to lose weight(necessarily), you just want to lose a little fat so you look a bit more toned.
