Hey guys i'm in lvl 11 now, but i've been struggling with pull ups this 4 months that I've been training, specially with the wide ones, I can only do like 6 regular pull ups , Am I progressing slow? I can't imagine me at lvl 12 doing the typewriters, need to work a lot on them, Then lvl 13 I need to be able to do muscle ups but if I can only do 6 pull ups, can I practice the muscle up ? I don't know what requirements I should have to attempt the muscle up.
Any suggestion about improving the repetitions of pull ups? Programs, routines, I don't know guys, i'm really desperate about this plateau.
1. to answer your question if you are progressing slow, one needs to know, how many pull ups you were able to do 4 months ago.
assuming that it were 3-4 or even more then you are progressing slow.
there are quite a few methods to progress, but i will just show you the ones which fit for your case.
obviously the easiest way to progress is with linear repetition progressions. just try to as many pull ups as you can to see what's your repetition maximum and then subtract 2 to get the perfect amount of repetitions for your workout. so if you can do 6 perfect pull ups, do for example 6 sets of 4 reps in your workout. with every training you should add one repetition. 1. training: 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4; 2nd training: 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4; third training 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4 etc...
if that does not work for you, you maybe either train too much or not enough. for beginners it is often the first variant. your muscles does not adapt while you are working out, but while you rest. not resting enough wil hinder your muscle growth and limit your strength development. get enough sleep, rest every second day if your are doing the full body workout and implement a one week break every 5 or 6 weeks to allow your body full recovery.
assuming linear repetition progressions doesn't work for you and you are sure that you train enough (3-4 times a week) but not too much (5-7 times a week) i would suggest you to try to grease the groove. that means that you do a low amount of repetitions many times a day. so if you can do 6 pull ups that would be 2-3 reps with 4 sets, 3 times a day. the low amount of reps in a set should not exhaust you too much, but it will set an additional stimulus to your normal training regime.
2. start type writers if you can do 8-10 clean pull ups. muscle ups are a skill, you will not achieve them with just doing pull ups. instead you need to do negative muscle ups, explosive pull ups and jump on the bar muscle ups. shuttle pushups and russian dips can help as well, because they include a quite similiar transition movement to the muscle up.
i hope that will help you ;)
Hey man thank you very much for your answer! 4 months ago I couldn't do any pull ups haha, 0 reps.
I'll try the Armstrong pull up program for 6 weeks, I will not be unmotivated because of a simple amount of reps. I train 3 days a week with the FBProgram, Mon, Wed, Fri, but I didn“t see the 16 week workout schedule example, and I realized that I need to train 4 days a week and then 3 days and so on.
I'm progressing really well with negative muscle ups, shuttle push ups and dips, push exercises are not a problem :) however, pull exercises are more difficult for me.
Thank you very much for your comment man, I really appreciate it.
Greetings from Mexico.
Hey man, glad to hear from you again. Well, you can definately try the linear way of progressing; however I think that maybe just doing more explosive exercises help progress in a way. I don't know how or why, but from experience, I can tell you that it works. Also, make sure you REALLY can't do any more reps. The mind can sometimes trick us, but remember, results are outside our comfort zone! Keep going brother! Saludos de Monterrey!
you are welcome.
from 0 to 6 reps is for sure not plateauing. if you go on like that, you will easily hit 12 reps till the end of the year.
if you have an imbalance between push and pull make sure to do more for pulling than for pushing. imbalances can lead to serious injuries like impingement etc, trust me i know that :(
